Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Advances Capital Projects Under President Shelton Haynes

Since taking the helm as President and CEO in 2021, Shelton J. Haynes has continued Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation’s (RIOC) im plementation of significant capital projects, enhancing the quality of life across Roosevelt Island.

Most notably, RIOC oversaw a $4 5 million re novation of the island’s Sportspark athletic complex under Haynes’ leadership.

“We are excited to deliver these upgraded amenities that promote health, wellness, and an active lifestyle for residents,” said Hay nes.

The multi-year project involved entirely replacing the original 1970s-era Sportspark gymnasium building. The new facility includes a regulation-size gym, elevated running track, fitness center, pool, and more.

RIOC also continued modernizing the AVAC garbage collection system during Haynes’ tenure. This underground pneumatic tube network efficiently collects residential trash and recycling. Upgrades will enhance reliability.

“By improving core infrastructure like AVAC, we aim to sustain quality services that contribute to daily life on Roosevelt Island,” explained Haynes.

According to the CEO, RIOC has an additional $200 million slate of capital projects planned over the next ten years. These strategic investments will help maintain and expand amenities to serve residents.

“We take pride in prudent financial stewardship that allows us to fund crucial improvements across the island,” said Haynes.

The corporation’s ongoing capital projects advance under Haynes’ experienced leadership.
